Happy Birthday to The Great Gatsby!

As a New York writer, there’s no doubt that F.Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, published on this day 90 years ago, is an inextricable part of my literary unconscious and that, I would imagine, of many writers in New York and beyond. The novel’s illustration of the Roaring Twenties against the gritty, gorgeous backdrop of New York, with its generous homages to the Queensboro Bridge years before the rest of us dared in poems, songs, novels, movies, plays, etc., is a familiar and eternal source of inspiration. Daisy  Buchanan’s flapper soul dances in mine and I still feel the optometrist’s eyes looming over the industrial landscape as it morphs with the currents of the East River and my own salted skins shed every year as I urge closer and closer to the gaping sky above the Bridge.

Here are some awesome Buzzfeed quotes to bring us back to Gatsby and maybe even freshman year English class:http://www.buzzfeed.com/krystieyandoli/the-most-beautiful-sentences-in-the-great-gatsby#.cvM8M1d8O
